North side of the High Street immediately to the east of the North Bridge
Description
Timber fronted tenement buildings on the north side of the High Street, Edinburgh. The buildings housed various businesses including Robert Patrick, hat manufacturer and a watchmaker. In front of the buildings there is a large wellhead where a woman has been collecting water.

No.5 in volume.
Annotation below title reads 'The first floor is one of the two timber fronted tenements (probably the lower or eastmost, but authorities differ as to this) contained the printing house of Alan Ramsay from which "at the Sign of the Mercury" he issued his works from about 1717 & 1725. The eastmost house had originally gables like the other - these were removed about 1845. About 30 years later the upper stories [sic] of the westmost house were also removed. Both houses were entirely demolished in 1898.'
The High Street is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile that runs from George IV Bridge down to its junction with Jeffrey Street and St. Mary's Street.
