This photograph is from a volume entitled 'Photographs of houses in the vicinity of Lauriston Castle' which was compiled in 1909. The book has the armorial bookplate of Macknight Crawfurd of Cartsburn, Lauriston Castle, on the inside cover.
Silverknowe was built in 1862 for Mr J H Mackenzie. The house was extended several times while it was a private residence, and had a mature garden in front of it.
In 1950, the building was substantially altered to form Golf Club rooms, with a private flat for the Senior Professional, then Mr David Houston. The golf course was officially opened in 1957, initially with nine holes but soon extended to eighteen holes.
The building has since been largely demolished.
Silverknowes is a residential suburb in the north-west of Edinburgh. It is situated roughly three miles north-west of the city centre and about a mile south-east of Cramond. The area, which previously served as farm land, was developed as both private and council housing in the mid 20th century. Silverknowes Golf Course lies immediately to the north of the main housing development.
