30th Sept: 1916 Danube river-steamer Chirnavoda.[Cernavoda]

I finished my last letter just before we got to Reni. We arrived there about 9 a.m. & took a last tender farewell of our dear, dirty old troop train! We spent most of the morning unloading & checking our equipment, a tiresome job which has to be gone through so often. We then marched about a mile (it seemed like at least 10 miles) in blazing sunshine with over-coats & haversacks etc: to the Russian flagship H.M.S. "Russia" - where we had luncheon. A most sumptious [sumptuous] repast, which we partook of under an awning
on the upper deck. We marched on deck to the strains of "God Save the King"- (Royalty again!!)
We were very weary, very hot & very hungry! After healths were drunk & a few speeches made, we were all let loose, so we went off & explored Reni. It is a small, frontier town on the Danube, where boats "ford" the river across to Galatz & Braila in Rumania. The Danube is a fine, broad, sleepy-flowing river, not brilliant blue (as the "valse" says!) but very brown
