Such a v. uncomfie night in a terribly dirty, packed, Italian 2nd class compartment. But, oh Naples is enchanting! And we have seen it at its best - brilliant sunshine & azure blue skies. It is a beautifully situated town, surely one of the most beautiful situations in all the world? It lies at the foot, & on the slope, of several hills rising in an amphitheatre on the West side of the beautiful Bay of Naples. Nature has most certainly lavished her gifts most bountifully on this favoured spot! But if it is beautiful, then is it equally noisy, I should imagine it one of the noisiest cities in Europe! (With apologies to the Neapolitans!) The clatter of wheels at all hours of the day & night, the cracking of whips & the thrill cry of the hawkers added to the ceaseless importunities of drivers, guides, street vendors, beggars etc, all just very! [?]! But with it all, there is an abundant source of interest in the life & bustle of the streets. The town itself is not of much interest, so we did not spend much of our time there - but rather - as our time was so limited - we went out to Pompeii & gave most of our precious moments to seeing the ancient ruins. Pompeii is v. wonderful. We enjoyed the run out there in the electric train, it is roughly about 9 miles fr. Naples, thru' beautiful scenery. On one side, the sparkling, blue Bay; in front the blue-black Apennine Mts, the farthest peaks capped with snow, & to the West,
