A view of a section of rickety tenement buildings in the Old Town of Edinburgh. The walls and joists are uneven and appear to be leaning. The tenements have many small windows and there is washing drying outside of two of them.

Shoemakers' Close or Land is part of the Canongate. The east section of Shoemakers' Lands was known as Bible Land because of the stone carving of a bible above the entrance.
The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace.
