seventy-five grubby "S.W." attired in pyjamas all fighting for baths!! There is a big Turkish bath place in the grounds, 4 in at a time to be scrubbed & douched! Oh the joy of that bath - public or no public! The bath "scrum" went on for hours - in fact till the water ran out.
After a late breakfast, a number of the British inhabitants came out for us & took us in to town & showed us some of the "sights" - we went along the Nicholas Boulevard, a lovely terrace over-looking the Harbour.
It was a brilliant day & the view from the picturesque Boulevard of the busy, wide-reaching Docks & the deep-blue sea beyond, fringed on it's [its] W. & S.W. horizon by the grey & pink highlands of the Khersonesc & Crimean shores, is was a perfectly enchanting one. Odessa strikes one as such a gay, happy town; crowded out of door cafés, big, beautiful hotels, bands playing here & there, & throngs of light-hearted, well-dressed promenaders strolling along the shady length of the Boulevard or sitting about in the pretty gardens, that
just now, are ablaze with flowers. It is difficult to believe amid all this universal "joie de vivre", that
