Title
Page 83 from John Smith's Houses and Streets in Edinburgh
Description
Excerpt from page - " Orphan Hospital 1831 - On Monday the foundation stone of as new Orphan Hospital as a substitute for the old building to the east of the North Bridge was laid on a most beautiful site between the Dean House and John Watsons Hospital.
A bottle containing coins and newspapers having been deposited the ceremony of laying the stone was performed by the Lord President who is [?] of the Institution in presence of the Managers among whom we observed........We understand that the building will be a plain and neat structure fronting the south of less architectural grace than the neighbouring hospital of John Watson, but still sufficiently elegant to do justice to the singularly fine site which has been chosen....." Edinburgh Evening Courant June 30 1831.

This is a page from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh' by John Smith.
The Dean Orphan Hospital was converted in 1999 into the Dean Gallery.
The Dean Galley is situated immediately to the north-east of Belford Bridge in Edinburgh. The building was designed by Thomas Hamilton as an orphanage and completed in 1833. In the late 1990's the building was converted into a gallery by Terry Farrell and Partners to house the Gallery of Modern Art's collection of Dadaist and Surrealist art. The gallery also holds a large collection of sculpture by the Leith born Eduardo Paolozzi.
