Description
Three children peer out of a stair entrance in St John's Close, Edinburgh. The little girl is wearing a white pinafore and leather boots. One of the older boys is wearing a flat cap.An arched pend leads out to the street. The close looks quite run down and the window has broken window panes. A gas light fitting is attached to one of the walls.

St John's Close, no longer extant, was a narrow alley leading off the Canongate. It was adjacent to the grander St John's Street, still in existence, which was in the 18th and to a lesser extent the 19th century a prestigious place of residence.
