So-called 'Hokey-Pokey' men sold ice cream on the streets of Britain and the USA in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century. These street vendors were mostly Italian immigrants and the name 'Hokey-Pokey' may be a comic distortion of the sellers' cries in their native language.
