The battle of Yser was fought in October 1914. It was a vicious confrontation between the Belgian army and the German invaders. After many days of holding off German troops with great losses to their already small numbers the Belgian government took the decision to flood the low lands by opening the canal locks at Nieuport to the north and inundate the German trenches with water. On the 31st of October 1914 the Germans abandoned their positions along with much of their equipment and supplies for fear of drowning. The battle of Yser was effectively ended.
