Description
Next to a cafe, an arch with stone carvings of the bust of a woman and decorative flowers, leads away from the High Street and down a narrow alleyway. A sign hangs at the peak of the arch and reads: 'Paisley Close'.

Henry Paisley bought the land around the close in 1711. On November 24th, 1861, the adjacent tenement on Bailie Fyfe's close collapsed, killing thrity five people. The image sculpted at the entrance to the close is that of Joseph McIver, a young survivor of the tradgedy, who was pulled to safety after rescuers heard his call of "Heave awa chaps, ah'm no deid yet'.
