Many forms of trawling were the subject of dispute when they were first introduced. When ring net was first introduced in the Firth of Forth in 1884, it was no different. Ring netting was the method used to catch sprats by many south east coast fishermen until well into the 1970s.
This photograph shows several fishing boats tied up in Newhaven Harbour. They are ringnetters and usually worked in pairs. In the centre is the 'Euphemia' with the 'Boy David' to her left. Both were owned by Newhaven fisherman David Brand and fished for sprats in the Firth of Forth from October to March.
