Mount Fuji is an active volcano but is classified as having a low risk of eruption; the last eruption was during the Edo period in 1707. According to an old chronicle, people established a shrine on top of the mountain to pacify the eruptions and this was officially acknowledged by the government in 853. Towards the end of the Heian period (794-1192), the ideas of Shinto and Buddhism were combined, and people began to climb Mt. Fuji because they believed that if they climbed the mountain their wishes might come true.
