Alexander Hamilton was born in 1739. In 1758 he became assistant to John Straiton, surgeon, of Edinburgh, in 1762 he became a member of the Edinburgh College of Surgeons. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. In 1772 he was elected physician to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Towards the end of a long career he was appointed professor of midwifery in the University of Edinburgh.

He was the author of a number of treatises on the theory and practice of midwifery and on the treatment of the diseases of women.
