Description
The steep slope of the High Street, Edinburgh with its dilapidated shops and houses. The building on the corner is covered with many advertisements. A horse and cart stand on the cobbled street.

The accompanying text in the volume reads:
"26. View of the Houses which stood on the north side of the High Street between John Knox's House and the Netherbow Port. The tenement on the left immediately to the east of John Knox Free Church was the Excise Office previous to the reign of George II. The royal arms are seen on a tablet above the window of the first floor. Wilson says "The situation was particularly convenient for guarding the principal gate of the city and the direct avenue to the neighbouring seaport". The buildings were demolished about 1871."
Alexander Adam Inglis credited with production of print from the negative.
The opening on the right is the Leith Wynd, the position of which is now occupied by Jeffrey Street.
