This item was digitised as part of the Whose Town? project, an educational resource for schools. Unique archival material was gathered together to create a snapshot of a person's life at a particular point in Edinburgh's history.
Broomhouse, from the Scots brume hous, meaning the house where broom grows, is recorded as early as 1599 as part of the lands of Saughton. The mansion stood on the site now occupied by St Augustine's school. The modern areas of housing were built from 1947 onwards, but only the north east quarter is on Broomhouse land, with the remainder on parts of Saughton Mains and Parkhead Farm and the areas of Saughton House.
