Press cutting entry in Charles Boog Watson's ARP logbook
Description
A page of from the logbook of Charles Boog Watson, Air Raid Warden. The page records the date, 8th of May 1945 and the end of the war with the word, 'peace' in capital letters. Under this is a press cutting has been pasted in the diary. The cutting is taken from a newspaper on the day of Germany's surrender at the end of World War II. The article deals with Edinburgh's air raid experiences giving details of a couple of the greatest incidences, and also statistics for casualties, injuries and damaged houses.

This item was digitised as part of the Whose Town? project, an educational resource for schools. Unique archival material was gathered together to create a snapshot of a person's life at a particular point in Edinburgh's history.
Air Raid Warden, Charles Boog Watson donated his detailed log books and correspondence to Edinburgh City Libraries giving us a unique snapshot of ARP duties and an insight into Edinburgh at war.
Edinburgh escaped the worst of the bombing that took place during World War II. In total it is estimated that over 60 000 civilians were killed due to bombing in Britain during the war.
This is from the back of the A.R.P. Logbook kept by Charles Boog Watson, who was air raid warden in Murrayfield during the Second World War. The logbook records Boog Watson's daily rounds as he patrolled the neighbourhood checking and noting any chinks of light that broke the blackout. Boog Watson retired from his position in 1943, although he continued to log alerts and deliver blackout timetables in 1944, until he suffered from a partial stroke. However he obviously felt it fitting to conclude his logbook with the end of the war.
