Biography
John Elphinstone was the son of Lord Elphinstone but pre-deceased his father, so never acquired the title.
He is the author of a volume of prints entitled, "Fifteen views of the most remarkable buildings in the City of Edinburgh" dated around 1740. (The copy in our collections unfortunately has been modified over time and contains only ten prints.) The views from this volume were used to illustrate a second edition of Hugh Arnot's History of Edinburgh (1788).
He is also credited with publishing a map of Scotland which was used by both sides in the 1745 Rebellion.
