In 1958 Merchiston Tower was saved from demolition and work started on incorporating the Tower and birthplace of John Napier the inventor of logarithms and the decimal point, into a new college. Napier Technical College opened its doors to students in 1964 for courses including coopering, boat building and engineering.
The College expanded to Sighthill in 1984 and acquired the former War hospital at Craiglockhart in 1986 and also the former Thomas Clouston Clinic at Craighouse in 1994.
The College became Napier College of Science and Technology in 1967, Napier College of Commerce and Technology in 1974, Napier University in 1992 and then Edinburgh Napier University in 2009.
