In the early 19th century, The Oil Gas Company, developed the land at Tanfield, Canonmills and built Tanfield Hall as their premises. The company failed in 1839 and the vacated premises were used to host the first Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland on May 18th 1843. The Union of the Secession and Relief Churches was consummated here too on May 13th 1847.
