Causewayside Toll (Ratcliffe entry at lamp post behind group)
Description
Men speak in the middle of the toll road along Causewayside in Edinburgh. On either side of the thoroughfare are houses, some with stairways leading to their doors on upper levels. A cottage has the shutters for its windows open. The toll gates and house are just visible in the background.

Causewayside, or Causeyside, formed part of an ancient approach to Edinburgh from the south. It now refers to a section of road from West Preston Street, close to the Meadows, to Duncan Street.
