Description
A busy street scene. People walk along the road and the pavement of the Grassmarket. Horse drawn carts are making their way along the thoroughfare. A woman with a hat and carrying a basket walks beside a child. A hunched figure carries a package on their back. One of the many tenement houses has washing hanging from one of its windows. There are many chimney stacks on the roofs. Smoke is rising from them. A light hangs over the doorway of one of the houses. At the foot of the picture are the words "Blessed be to God for all his gifts" it is dated 1634. Within the inscription are the letters CK and the number 14

The Grassmarket is a central area situated below Edinburgh Castle. A weekly market was held there from 1477 until 1911. The area continues to be a popular area for socialising. The Grassmarket was also the site of many public executions
