The accompanying text in the volume reads:
"35. Mansion house of the Earls of Selkirk. This house stood on the south side of the High Street between South Grays Close & Hyndford Close. The view is taken from the south looking towards the High Street. The house was occupied in the end of the last century By Dr Daniel Rutherford, uncle of Sir Walter Scott, and it was one of Scotts favourite haunts when attending the High School."
