Description
There are buildings on both sides of the narrow High School Wynd and two external stone staircases. The cobbled street slopes downward to meet another street, there is a pavement on one side. A wooden ladder has been left on the street. There is a street lamp attached to the wall on the right.

The accompanying text in the volume reads:
"31. The same wynd looking down towards the Cowgate, in which is seen the turret of Cardinal Beatons House - see No 29. The houses on the east side of the wynd have been entirely demolished."
Although Alexander Inglis' monogram appears at the bottom of this photograph, it appears that he is not the artist. The photograph is very similar to one which appears in Archibald Burns' 'Picturesque bits of Old Edinburgh' (1868). Inglis' monogram possibly indicates his ownership of the negative.
High School Wynd is a short street linking Infirmary Street with the Cowgate. Edinburgh High School was built on what is now called Infirmary Street in 1578. The School moved to Regent Road in 1829, and stayed in those grand premises until moving to Barnton in 1969.
