Description

The arch of George IV Bridge spans the Cowgate in Edinburgh. On either side of the road are shops and houses, the houses being in a rundown state. Outside the shops are goods, some on the pavement and cobblestone road.

The accompanying text in the volume reads:
"25. View of the Cowgate looking through the arch of George IV Bridge, in the direction of the Grassmarket. The tenement on the extreme left of the view is still standing (1885) although uninhabited. this one of the few old mansions of the Cowgate still remaining.
This has now been demolished (1887)"
