The Band of Hope was part of the wider Victorian social reform and temperance movement but aimed at children under 16. The organisation encouraged young people to 'sign a pledge' to avoid alcohol consumption and aimed to protect children from the cruelty and neglect which resulted from adults' intoxication and alcoholism. You can read more about the history of the Band of Hope on the website of
Hope UK
, as it is now known.
Barnbougle Castle is situated on the Firth of Forth, roughly 2 miles east of South Queensferry. It is a 13th century tower house, built by and still in the ownership of the Rosebery family.
An intended 18th century rebuilding designed by Robert and James Adam was abandoned when the Rosebery family instead had Dalmeny House built on the estate (1817). Already in disrepair, Barnbougle was left a ruin when the gunpowder stored there accidentally exploded. It was reconstructed in 1881 (in 16th century style according to the Lothian volume of 'Buildings of Scotland'). This photograph with the Band of Hope shows the ruin shortly before the reconstruction.
This photograph is from a volume entitled 'Photographs of houses in the vicinity of Lauriston Castle' which was compiled in 1909. The book has the armorial bookplate of Macknight Crawfurd of Cartsburn, Lauriston Castle, on the inside cover.
