Description
A close with tenement buildings on either side. Washing hangs from the windows of the buildings. In the background is the arched entrance to the close, people can be seen on the main street beyond. Men and women walk through the close. A man with a hat stands in the doorway of a building, in a side entrance stands another man with a hat and a walking cane. Along the bottom is the inscription "O lord in the is al my praist 1569".

Lawnmarket is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from its' junction with Johnston Terrace to where it meets George IV Bridge. Regular markets were held in this area until the late eighteenth century.
