Description

The Royal Maternity Hospital sits on Lauriston Place, Edinburgh. The building has a central entrance section with steps leading up to an arched doorway. Wings on their side have pitched roofs. There is a flagpole on the middle of the building. Tenement buildings with shops below them can be seen further down the street. Cast iron street lamps can be seen on the edge of the pavement.

This is a photograph by a member of the Edinburgh Photographic Society.

The Edinburgh Royal Maternity and Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion was Edinburgh's first purpose-built maternity hospital although maternity services had been available in Edinburgh since the 1750s. It opened on the 1st May 1879 at Lauriston Place as a place where the poor could have their children under medical supervision. This building was used until 1939 when a new Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion was opened in the Royal Infirmary. The building at Lauriston Place became known as "Old Simpsons".
