The public promenade on Castle Hill was an 18th century custom. The ridge was widened and levelled in 1753 with rubble taken from the Royal Exchange site and further developed to make the Esplanade of today.
The Castle Esplanade is an area of open ground between the castle and Castlehill. The area is used for the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
