Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday 8 September at Balmoral at the age of 96 after reigning for 70 years. On Sunday 11 September, two public Proclamations were made in Edinburgh to announce the accession of the King, first from the Mercat Cross and then from Edinburgh Castle. The Queen’s funeral cortege travelled from Balmoral, via Ballater, Aberdeen and Dundee arriving at Holyrood Palace on Sunday 11 September. On Monday 12 September, large crowds had gathered to watch the ceremonial procession which accompanied Her Majesty’s coffin up the Royal Mile to St Giles Cathedral. A special service was attended by King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort and other members of the Royal Family. Members of the public were permitted to view the coffin lying at rest at St Giles Cathedral before the cortege procession continued to Edinburgh Airport and onto London.
