Blue silk banner for the Independent Order of Rechabites

Description

One blue silk banner for the Independent Order of Rechabites. The banner has a yellow silk border and similar painted decoration on both sides. The title scroll cartouche reads, 'INDEPENDENT ORDER OF RECHABITES', with, 'SALFORD UNITY EDINBURGH DISTRICT, No. 35', below. The centre panel features a coat of arms with the motto, 'PEACE AND PLENTY THE REWARD OF TEMPERANCE', below, 'LIGHTHOUSE TENT NO 1400', and, 'NEWHAVEN', and, 'INSTITUTED 1896'. There are cameos on the left and right, the left depicting a Newhaven Street and on the right a rough sea at night.

The Rechabites were a temperance Friendly Society, who organised into Tents. This banner, painted in 1902 incorporates a design for the earlier Beacon Light Tent, Instituted in 1895, and that of the Lighthouse Tent, instituted in 1895.
