One Anti-Vivisection banner. Natural coloured linen banner with painted design on one side. At top: SCOTLAND; RING OUT THE DARKNESS OF THE LAND RING IN THE CHRIST THAT IS TO BE; Portrait of Rober Burns, a Clydesdale horse, Labrador and Collie dogs, sheep, rabbits and thistles. NATURES SOCIAL UNION. On scrolls, Faries holding bluebells and RING OUT THE OLD, RING OUT THE NEW. Along the bottom LOVE IS THE FULFILLING OF THE LAW.

The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Vivisection was founded in 1911, taking up the work of the Scottish Branch of the National Anti-vivisection Society. The aims of the society were the abolition of vivisection, the protection of animals from cruelty and the prevention of the infliction of suffering. The society had its headquarters in Edinburgh with volunteers working in different parts of Scotland. The banners were displayed at fundraising events and public meetings. The main fundraising event each year was the Dog's Bazaar, which was held in November in the Assembly Rooms. The conveners of each of the areas displayed a banner behind their stall.

The design of HH4602/85 was used for the front cover of the SSPV Annual Report from 1912 until 1955 and the HH4601/85 first appears in the 1913 Annual Report. It seems likely that the banners were all painted by the same artist and date from this period. The predominant colours are green, purple, black and white. The banners were donated by the Society as a complete collection in 1983. Today, the Society, under the name Advocates for Animals, campaigns against all forms of animal abuse.
