Women’s Land Army issue shoes, 1939-49
These shoes were part of a smart and practical uniform worn by members of the Women’s Land Army who took on farm work and related roles during World War 2. A wide-brimmed hat, green woollen jumper and knee breeches were also worn.
The Women’s Land Army, or ‘land girls’ as they were often called, made a major contribution to feeding the British population during the War. The conflict led to a drastic reduction in imported food, while also taking men off the land and into service. Women stepped in to boost the productivity of agricultural land, carrying out jobs such as ploughing, planting, harvesting, forestry and pest control.
