Title
Men's platform shoes, Schuh, early 1980s
Description
Men's leather lace-up shoes in cream and orange, with a high platform sole of moulded plastic. A diamond design formed from leather and decorative stitching is placed across the toes.
Accession number
SH.2019.075
Platform shoes for men are mainly associated with the 1970s. Although these date from the 1980s, they were worn by a man with a keen interest in alternative music, including the psychedelic folk band the Incredible String Band. Musical ‘tribes’ often retain fashions after they fall out of favour in the mainstream: they are a way of clearly signalling your musical tastes.
The first Schuh store opened on North Bridge in Edinburgh in 1981. There are now over 100 branches nationally and internationally.
