The street to the left of the houses was called Newport Street, in connection with the nearby Union Canal. This area was demolished and was being used as a car park in the 1980s. Remnants of Newport Street survived though and funeral directors W.T. Dunbar's livery stable was there and was used as a garage for their funeral cars. (W. T. Dunbar still have premises on nearby Lothian Road.) The tenement to the right was standing until the early 1990s, and at nos. 58 & 62 was a pub called The Regal Arms, which later became the Centre Spot owned by former Hearts football player Gary Mackay.
