Castlebarns House, Morrison Street after the demolition of Hopetoun House

Description

Castlebarns House with its rough stone construction and pantile roof stands in Morrison Street, Edinburgh. The house has an arched opening to the front with large square windows facing the street. Its multi-level roofs have tall chimney stacks on them. A fence surrounds the demolished Hopetoun House in the foreground, in front of which men are working on the street. Piles of cobbles and rubble lies on the road.

Castlebarns is an earlier name for a short section of Morrison Street running west from Semple Street. The name was lost in the latter half of the 19th century when the name Morrison Street, which had originally referred to the section of the street west of Dewar Place, began to be applied to the street as far east as Lothian Road. St Anthony's Place to the east of Castlebarns, and Tobago Street to the west were similarly absorbed into Morrison Street.
