Pilrig is about halfway between Edinburgh and Leith. The Balfour family built Pilrig House in 1638 on the remains of an artillery fort. It was bequeathed in 1941 to the people of Leith, becoming the responsibility of Edinburgh Council. In 1982 the house was restored and converted into six apartments.
