Biography
David Doull was born in Edinburgh in 1831 to David Doull (confectioner/wine manufacturer) and Mary Rimington. He had a sister Lillias Doull. He married Janet (Jessie) Brodie in 1864 and they had a son, David Henry Doull, in 1865. He died of heart disease on 24 April 1867 at 72 Lauriston Place (aged 35).
He was a professional photographer and was one of the seven founding members of the Edinburgh Photographic Society in 1861. He does not appear in the Post Office Directories until 1865 however, when he is listed as working at 72 Lauriston Place.
The Edinburgh Room has a collection of 319 David Doull glass negatives dating from 1866-67. These were purchased in 1970 from Frank Seymour, a photographer who also worked from the shop on Lauriston Place. The premises were demolished in May 1970.
