Craig House Asylum was designed by the architect Sydney Mitchell and built during 1889-94 as new premises for the Royal Edinburgh Asylum. It was designed exclusively for private patients, and looked like a fashionable hydropathic hotel both inside and outside. Its situation on the north slopes of Easter Craiglockhart Hill, in 60 acres of woodland with views north over the Firth of Forth to Fife, was intended to be uplifting.

The clinic was closed in 1993 due to the cost of maintenance and a decrease in the number of in-patients, and the estate was sold to Napier University in 1994. It was in use as a campus from 1996 to 2013, after which it was sold to a developer.
