More than any other illustration within the book this one reveals the influence of Aestheticism. The Aesthetic art movement in Britain was based on the maxim 'art for art's sake'. It regarded decorative art as of equal value to fine art and emphasised the importance of visual beauty, which had suffered at the expense of material gain under industrial capitalism. Sunflowers were commonly associated with Aestheticism due to their ostentatious appearance and here Crane combines this hallmark with a decadent style of dress. In his art Crane both advertised and challenged the Aesthetic movement, as for him art always had a purpose. In his writings he also claimed that without the beauty in everyday items (the decorative art that Aestheticism along with the Arts and Crafts movement encouraged) then the pictorial arts wouldn't be able to flourish (1).
