Title
Page twenty-two of 'Flora's Feast', the Rose
Description
A winged male figure attempts to lovingly embrace the female rose, holding both her hands to try and draw her closer. The young woman blushes and turns away. The couple are surrounded by rose leaves and are lavishly dressed in historical garments that are coloured pink and adorned with love-hearts. The accompanying text reads:
"And Love's own flower the blushing Rose,
The Queen of all the garden close".

Continuing the theme of love, this illustration is the more obvious exception to Crane's otherwise alternative use of flowers through emphasis on their form over their meaning, as this image is reminiscent of the way in which the Pre-Raphaelite artists would use flowers in their paintings to incorporate coded messages between couples. Furthermore, for them the garden represented a secret place for lovers to meet and this could be represented here by the fact that the rose leaves and thorns in the background give the impression of entwining the couple together in an enclosed space.
Playing on the term 'blushing rose' Crane likens this to the human act of becoming flushed, therefore bringing the figures closer to the natural world they are supposed to embody.
