The personification of Buttercups matches other images of children in gardens by Crane where they are happy and surrounded by nature. This could be seen as a comment on the importance for children to be free and to use their imaginations and in an ideal situation to have a childhood spent outside.

Again there is an element of humour to Crane's personification as he fashions the head of a cow from cowslips.
