Page ten from 'Flora's Feast', the Lady-smocks

Two women wearing pale blue and pink dresses carry the accessories of milk-maids: a bucket, in this instance filled with lady-smock (or milk-maid) flowers; and a stool. The accompanying text reads:
"The "Lady smocks all silver white"
The milk-maids of the meadows bright".

As with the previous page, the flower people in this illustration are engaged in agricultural work, dismissing the contemporary association of labour with machines. This time their role in the community as milk maids is the result of wordplay as Crane calls upon the alternative name for lady-smocks.
The dresses they are wearing also form part of the eclectic mix of styles represented throughout the book that come together to build a case in favour of diversity and freedom in contemporary fashion.
