The newly bloomed Crocus is personified in this illustration as a naked cherub-like figure. Crane is relating the beginnings of flowering with innocence and youth.
In accordance with the other illustrations contained within the book, the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement and the Medievalism that was a central element to it is visible here in the decorative capitalisation of the hand written letters that resembles those of illuminated manuscripts. Again, the image and the accompanying poem are both considered in the overall composition as both are subtly aligned to the same side.
