Title
The House that Jack Built, page 25.
Description
Two line drawings depict a Priest walking through the graveyard in front of his Church and a cockerel standing proudly, surrounded by hens. The accompanying text reads as follows,
"This is the Priest, all shaven and shorn,
That married the Man all tattered and torn,
That kissed the Maiden all forlorn,
That milked the Cow with
the crumpled horn,
That tossed the Dog,
That worried the Cat,
That killed the Rat,
That ate the Malt,
That lay in the House that
Jack built."
"This is the Cock that crowed in the morn
That waked the Priest all shaven and shorn,
That married the Man all tattered and torn,
That kissed the Maiden all forlorn,
That milked the Cow with
the crumpled horn,
That tossed the Dog,
That worried the Cat,
That killed the Rat,
That ate the Malt,
That lay in the House that
Jack built."

An illustrated page from 'The House that Jack Built', a toy-book created for the nursery by Randolph Caldecott originally published in 1878. Caldecott is predominately known for his book illustrations and is widely considered to have transformed the nature of children's books in the nineteenth century. This story, 'The House That Jack Built', was part of a two book series, known as the 'Picture Books’, that were published every Christmas for eight years. His illustrations were exercised with a manner of humour and full of life, reflecting his own personality. Stylistically, 'The House that Jack Built' is written in the form of a cumulative tale. This is when a tale is told by repeating dialogue that builds up to allow the story to progress.
