Title
The Herdsman's Vows; The Horse and the Ass. Illustrated page from 'Baby's Own Aesop'
Description
A lion, standing on three cows, bites into the shoulder of the foremost one. To their right, a man on his knees and holding a staff, reaches his arms towards a statue surrounded by foliage. The rhyme reads:
"The Herdsman's Vows
A Kid vowed to Jove, so might he
Find his herd, and his herd did he see
Soon, of lions the prey:
Then 'twas - "Get me away,
And a goat of the best take for fee."
How often would we mend our wishes."
In the lower half of the page, a man with a turban and staff reaches out his arm and looks towards a horse and a donkey. The horse is saddled and standing, the donkey lies on the ground beneath a pack and large woven basket. The rhyme reads:
"The Horse and the Ass
Overladen the ass was. The horse
Wouldn't help; but had time for remorse
When the ass lay dead there;
For he then had to bear
Both the load of the ass and his corse.
Grudge not help."
