Title
The Man and the Snake, illustrated page from 'Baby's Own Aesop'
Description
A man holds a snake at arm's length, and in his other arm a small child. A woman and a child also cower from the snake, one behind the man and one on the ground; both raise an arm in alarm. A fire burns to the left of them, and above the fire sits the rhyme, in a swirling snake motif. It reads:
"The Man and the Snake
In pity he brought the poor snake
To be warmed at his fire. A mistake!
For the ungrateful thing
Wife and children would sting.
I have known some as bad as the snake.
Beware how you entertain traitors."
