When World War One broke out in August 1914, people clamoured to support the war effort. This included a movement which became known as the Scottish Women's Hospital. Originally intended to set up a hospital in Edinburgh to treat the returning war wounded, but they decided on a different approach, establishing field hospitals close to the action. They quickly formed a committee and started fundraising, managing to raise more than £5000 by the end of August 1914.
