About the artist
Name
Murata, Kokoku
Biography
Born in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kokoku studied painting with Nukina Kaioku (1778-1863) and poetry with Yanagawa Seigan (1789-1858). He travelled to Nagasaki to study Chinese-style painting, and specialized in ink landscapes, as well as poetry and calligraphy. Towards the end of his life he moved from Tokyo to Osaka.
In Japanese culture a person's family name comes first, so this artist's name is written Murata Kokoku.
