In 2016, a former colleague mentioned to us that he had 'inherited' some glass negatives that had been found in a cupboard in his flat in Claremont Crescent a few years earlier.
He didn't know much about them, or even what or who they were of. Some of them were broken, and before they became more damaged, he offered them to us to investigate and to digitise.
In 1812 Colonel James Paterson from Musselburgh, invented and patented the first machine that could tie knots for the manufacture of fishing nets. When he died, his company was bought over by J.W Stuart who built a new factory manufacturing fishing nets on the banks of the River Esk.
Stuart's Mill employed over 800 people in cotton processing and rope manufacturing, playing a major part in the local economy, and dominated the fishing net manufacturing for decades. With the introduction of newer man-made materials, Esk Net Mills slowly declined.
The company and the factory closed in 1979, and passed through various owners eventually falling into disrepair. The core "Victorian" site has been completely redeveloped and is now the home of Eskmills which offers business premises, Eskmills Venue and Crolla's Italian Kitchen.
